Magistralis

Magistralis is a majestic unique piece and Grande Complication. It boasts a perpetual calendar, a mono-pusher column-wheel chronograph, a moon phase featuring a genuine lunar meteorite and a minute repeater with cathedral gongs which is wonderfully complemented by an accompanying violin-style amplifying case.

Such impressive functions are complemented by an equally impressive movement. Magistralis’ Vallée de Joux calibre was created in Geneva over 100 years ago and duly bears the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark, featuring a flame-blued Breguet balance spring and hand-bevelled, flat-polished moustache lever escapement.

The luxuriant shimmer of the black Côtes du Jura guilloche contrasts neatly with the four recessed sub-dials which are coloured ‘old rose’ ensuring excellent legibility, as gilded and blued steel hands form a rich plethora of indications.

There are central chronograph seconds complemented by a 30-minute chronograph counter incorporated into a month sub-dial at 12 o’clock. A date sub-dial at 3 o’clock is accompanied by a day-of-the-week sub-dial at 9 o’clock.

Meanwhile, the moon phase incorporating small seconds at 6 o’clock contains a fragment of the rare Dhofar 459 lunar meteorite – a real piece of the moon that fell to Earth.

A slider on the case band at 2 o’clock operates the minute-repeater, a function that is audibly enhanced by the accompanying violin-style amplifying case, beautifully hand made by luthier Claude Bouquard.

The stunning timepiece and repeater amplifier are presented together with an original 1856 second edition of master watchmaker Louis Moinet’s great reference work Traité d’Horlogerie in a delicately hand-crafted curly maple and varnished spruce case.
